The Elephant in the Room: Tha Carter IV

Does it pain me to post this? Yes. It’s almost like finding out Santa Claus isn’t real. Don’t get me wrong, Tha Carter III was my soundtrack in high school. Don’t ask me to rap the entire album, because I can.. and I will. Weezy was up there with God and my mom. We’ve all eaten up the leaks from TCIV (solely to get our opinions heard), and it was the anticipated album of the year, mainly because hip-hop heads (and 98% of individuals with ears) were ready to pounce like it was last call at the bar with a guy to chick ratio of 10:1. Or a lion on some animal carcass, whichever analogy you prefer.

I’d probably say “She Will” was the better of the leaks, but that could be because Drake has a hold on my heart as of late. In my mind, the man can do no wrong. But the masses may argue for “How to Love”–of the five times I’ve listened to the radio in the past month, it’s been on every one. Remind me to get a new aux cable for my iPod, by the way.

Am I a bandwagon-converted Wayne-hater? No. I wanted to be blown away by this album. A (very) small part of me kept trying to convince myself that he was leaking the weak stuff just for shits and gigs. I mean… he did go to jail, isn’t that some sort of right of passage prior to making the illest album of a rapper’s career?

Personal disappointment aside, my ears didn’t bleed. I’m actually on a quest to hear out someone who honestly enjoyed TCIV, so if you’re out there, speak your piece (@DanaBergs).

A few words from the peanut gallery, aka the S17 team:

Adam
“It motherfucking sucks.”
“I understand that the innate pressures associated with following up an album as good as
TCIII must be ridiculous, but did it really have to suck that bad? Couldn’t it have sucked slightly less?”
“It is, legit, as bad as
The Red Album… by the fucking Game.”

Becky
“I would rather listen to a recording of Weezy taking a shit.”

(Insert nostalgic quote here). Gone is the Weezy F. Baby I once held in the highest regards.

  1. I think Wayne has made a pretty good effort to expand his fan base over the years by changing up his style musically, and it looks great on mixtapes..But imo TCIV just didn’t mess well, this album would’ve been dope as a mixtape but it fails to live up to the expectations & hype of Carter albums pass..It’s a quality album but I really expected much better from Wayne.

  2. So what exactly sux so bad about this album?? I hear you all hating but no one has reasons to back up their negativity. Put up or shut up!!
